Water and sanitation: For many of the world's poorer populations, one of the greatest threats to public health, livelihood and ecosystem functions remains the continued discharge of untreated wastewater into fresh and coastal environments. Emphasis on water supply coupled with weak enforcement of regulations has limited the effectiveness of major investments and programmes in the area of water supply and sanitation in recent decades, particularly in developing regions.
